Passed away 12 October 2023 - age 74
James Currie Wright, of East Dalhousie, passed away on October 12, 2023, in the Bridgewater Hospital after a long battle with Cancer at the age of 74.
He was born on August 22, 1949, in Greenock, Scotland. He immigrated to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario at the age of four, where he spent his adolescent years. He joined the Navy in 1967 in Halifax where he served on various ships
as a cook:
HMCS Assiniboine #234, May 1967- April 1970
• Gloucester Base Ottawa 1970-1973
• Alert 6 months 1973
• HMCS Saguenay #206 July 1973-May 1974 left Navy
• Returned to the Navy in 1976
• HMCS Saguenay #206 – Feb 1976-June 1978
• HMCS Protecteur #509 June 1978-July 1980
• HMCS Iroquois #280 Dec 1980-July 1983
• Cyprus 6 months 1984
• Army - Lahr, Germany 1985-1989
• HMCS Protecteur Dec 1989-February 1990
After retiring from the Navy in 1990, he continued to work as a long-haul truck driver and Commissionaire at various postings. Being in the Navy gave him his love of travel which he did lots of during his time in the service.
In retirement, he enjoyed travelling back to Europe, including Ireland and Greece. The Navy and travel solidified his love for cooking. Though he never got used to family-sized meals, he always made enough to feed an army.
He developed a love for Newfoundland, the southwest coast in particular where he had a summer home for almost 20 years. While there, he enjoyed being out in his boat, at one of his off-grid cabins, and he rediscovered his love of painting.
He loved music of all kinds, telling a good story, reading, having a laugh or a dance with Liz and a drink of good scotch. He loved to doodle, especially putting moustaches, devil horns, and missing teeth on magazine pictures.
He was always ready to lend a hand with wood splitting and home renovations. Sometimes he motivated friends to get started on home renovations they had been talking about for too long. He could fix anything with duct tape and many nails, but electricity was not his friend.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Liz Billard), and daughters Heather Wright (Jon Lowthers), and Meagan Shaw (Tyler). Granddaughters Rebecca and Abbygail Shaw. He was predeceased by his parents, Ellen(Currie) and William Wright and brothers Bill Wright, George Wright and sister June Beith (Fred). He is survived by his sisters Pat Briel and Ellen Levo and brother-in-law James Billard
(Florence).
Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be spread in the Scotland highlands. A celebration of life will take place at the Windsor Legion in Windsor, NS on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 1-3 pm.
Donations in memory of Jim can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetes Association or your charity of choice.
