Passed away 27 July 2016 - age 87
It is with deep regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of Henry Burns on July 27, 2016, at the Fredericton Hospice House with his wife by his side, after a long, courageous battle. Born on August 23, 1938 in Scotchtown, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late James and Charlotte (Nearing) Burns.
Henry is survived by his wife, Mary (McPhee); children, Michael (Donna) of Ottawa, ON, Deborah (Stephan) of Moncton, NB, Wendy, and Cynthia (Paul); sons-in-law, Wilfred Sabattis and Wayne Poirier of Oromocto, NB; siblings, Bill, James, Jenice, Andrea, and Charles, all of Cape Breton. Henry will also be missed by 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends
In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by his daughter, Gale Poirier and brothers, Ernie and Luke Burns.
Henry served 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving time in Germany, Cyprus, and Egypt. During his career, he attended many Black Watch reunions in Aldershot, often setting up his kitchen in the back of his truck. For many years Henry catered social events in the community, feeding as many as one thousand people. This started his passion for cooking. He was also very active, playing many sports and earning many medals with his brothers, Jim and Luke.
Special thanks to the staff of Oromocto Public Hospital, Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, and the Fredericton Hospice House.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #93. A memorial mass will be held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Antonio Reyes officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Henry's memory can be made to Fredericton Hospice House.
